The 1st Oral Health Innovation and Intelligence Forum (“Forum”) and the Stomatology Contest (“Contest”) of the 6th China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition 2023 were officially opened in beautiful Shaoxing on April 19. Based on themes of innovation and internationalization, the Forum focused on cutting-edge dental technologies, explored focal topics such as advanced dental technologies, biomimetic materials, artificial intelligence, intelligent manufacturing, innovation and entrepreneurship, sought new directions for industry development and built consensus for deep integration of the industry chain.
The Forum invited leaders, including Ma Guocan, CPC Leading Group member and Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of Shaoxing Municipal People’s Congress, Qian Linjiang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Mayor of Yuecheng District, Shaoxing City, Wang Songling, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Chinese Stomatological Association and Vice President of Capital Medical University, Jiang Feng, President of China Strategic Alliance of Medical Device Innovation and Executive Vice President of the China Association for Medical Devices Industry (“CAMDI”), Zhou Yongsheng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, Zhang Zhenkang, honorary dean of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology and founding president of the Chinese Stomatological Association, and Sun Yuchun, President of the Committee of Dental Equipment and Materials, CAMDI, and gathered nearly 100 senior industry experts, heads of domestic and foreign leading medical device enterprises and experts in the investment field on site.
The Forum was hosted by China Strategic Alliance of Medical Device Innovation, CAMDI, Committee of Dental Equipment and Materials, CAMDI, Shaoxing City Yuecheng District People’s Government and Shaoxing Binhai New Area Management Committee and undertaken by Innomd.org, Zhejiang Guochuang Medical Device Co., Ltd. and Shaoxing Yuecheng Medical Device Industry Innovation Service Complex.

Qian Linjiang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Mayor of Yuecheng District, Shaoxing City, gave the opening remarks. He said that Shaoxing has been adhering to the concept of innovation driving and talent leading in recent years, and in reliance on the National Torch Shaoxing Health Equipment and New Medical Materials Special Industry Base and based on the “10 thousand mu of land and RMB 100 billion” new industrial platform for high-end biomedicine, Shaoxing vigorously develops emerging and leading industries related to medical devices and has successively introduced more than 10 key projects of Pushikang Biotechnology, Meio Medical, Jau Medical, etc. and gathered three listed enterprises, 13 enterprises above designated size, 17 national high-tech enterprises and 31 provincial scientific and technological enterprises in the medical device field; Shaoxing has formed an industry pattern with segments such as high-end medical dressings, in vitro diagnosis and implantation and intervention medical devices as the core and the rapid development of new areas such as mobile healthcare, smart healthcare and cell therapy, with highly prominent industrial agglomeration advantages, sci-tech innovation advantages and R&D transformation advantages.

Then, Jiang Feng, President of China Strategic Alliance of Medical Device Innovation and Executive Vice President of CAMDI, said in his speech that as the first contest of the 6th China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition, the Contest received extensive attention from the industry. Launched in 2018 under the guidance of the Department of Science and Technology for Social Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition (“Competition”) has become the world’s largest national-level competition with the most participating projects in the medical device field. Cumulatively more than 3,000 projects signed up in the previous five sessions. Characterized by high marking criteria, strict selection and evaluation, fairness and impartiality, the Competition strongly promotes the transformation of medical device innovation achievements, which has received unanimous praise from the industry.
With the Competition included in the “Innovation China” activities last year, the organizing committee has been committed to providing innovation service support for various innovative projects, with a professional OEM platform established in Yuecheng, Shaoxing. He said that the organizing committee will provide more innovation services for medical device innovation projects in the future to promote the high-quality development of China’s medical device industry.

Zhou Yongsheng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, expressed in his speech that international oral medical technologies are developing towards digitization and intelligence. In recent years, China has developed corresponding innovative products of the continuously developed technologies for oral organisms, artificial intelligence equipment, tooth structure 3D printing and material simulation, and many dental medical device enterprises with aspirations and feelings are constantly innovating and developing and have realized substitution by Chinese-developed medical devices or even surpassing in innovative technologies. He said that we can proudly tell the world that China has already possessed advanced dental medical device products, and some of our advanced technologies, represented by artificial intelligence, 3D printing, robots and new simulation materials, have overall reached the international level or even led in the world. He said that the current development of independently innovated dental technologies shows a full explosion situation and they may lead and drive the innovative development of the entire dental medical device field and that we will continue to forge ahead and realize the Chinese dream in stomatology.

Wang Songling, Vice President of Capital Medical University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a keynote report titled Small Oral Cavity - Big Health. Academician Wang said that to achieve oral health, efforts should be made to create a new mode of body health prevention and control and mentioned that his team is currently researching new dental pulp stem cell drugs for the treatment of chronic periodontitis and also proposed the concept of biological root regeneration. Further, the team has successfully discovered the transport pathway of nitrates and their protective effects on the body. They found through research that oral administration of inorganic nitrates can effectively prevent the radiation injury of salivary glands and avoid radiation-induced xerostomia. This finding is of great significance to maintaining oral health and improving the postoperative quality of life of patients with head and neck tumors.
Concurrently, the Committee of Dental Equipment and Materials, CAMDI also held a ceremony to recruit special experts and commend members. Through votes by all member units and review by CAMDI, Professor Sun Yuchun was unanimously elected as the President of the Committee of Dental Equipment and Materials, CAMDI, and Professor Geng Qilu was elected as the Executive Vice President thereof. Then, the Committee commended excellent vice president units, vice presidents, council member units, council members, member units and group standard-implementing individuals.
On the same day, more than 10 industry experts gave keynote presentations on hot topics in the oral health field, such as tissue regeneration, 3D printing, innovative technologies for dental medical devices, dental surgical microscope systems, tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (TDN) technology, artificial intelligence, retraction prevention technology, and oral software applications. Through these keynote presentations, they depicted the development achievements of the oral health field in China in recent years. With the development of China’s dental medical devices, through continuous efforts from the industry, China’s oral medical device industry will continue to drive breakthroughs in technological innovation, contributing to China’s appearance on the international stage and leading international innovation and development in the field.
