The China Particle Therapy Facility Design and Construction Roundtable Forum (“Forum”) was held successfully on March 19, 2022!

The Forum was hosted by China Association for Medical Devices Industry (“CAMDI”), Chinese Research Hospital Association, and Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University, co-hosted by Tianjin Huahui Engineering Architectural Design Co., Ltd., Central-South Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd., and China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp., Ltd. Shanghai Company, and undertaken by Beijing Chinatsinghua Particle Technology Co., Ltd., with Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Beijing Office as the cooperating entity and TusStar, China National Machine Tool Sales and Technical Service Corporation, and Zhongye Changtian International Engineering Co., Ltd. as the industrial partners.
The opening ceremony, keynote speeches, strategic cooperation signing ceremony, and book launch ceremony were held in the morning.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Forum Executive Chair Tang Jintian, researcher in Department of Engineering Physics and Deputy Director of Medical Physics and Engineering Research Institute, Tsinghua University, where Forum Chairs Jiang Feng (Executive Vice President of CAMDI), Wang Xuewu (Professor and Chair of Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University) and Zhou Xianzhi (Executive Vice President of Chinese Research Hospital Association) delivered speeches.
According to Jiang Feng, China’s particle therapy is rising rapidly, China has made a big breakthrough in the number of particle therapy centers built and under construction compared with the past, China will set up hundreds of particle therapy centers in the future according to the density in developed countries, and the field of particle therapy is an important field worthy of vigorous development and innovation in China, and he expressed the hope that industry colleagues will work together to share experience and improve the level.
Wang Xuewu emphasized that particle therapy facility design and construction cannot be separated from accelerator and radiation protection specialties, and as particle therapy facilities ultimately serve lives and health, particle therapy facility design and construction cannot be separated from biomedicine either. He expressed the hope that through the Forum, practitioners could gather the professional strength of multiple fields, learn experience and lessons, seize the opportunity, strengthen unity, and jointly promote development.

According to Forum Co-Chairs Zhang Yi, Mei Lin, Wang Guiling, and Chen Guoliang, problems with China particle therapy facility design and construction include a short development period, limited summaries of technical experience, and lack of unified industry standards; under the background of the needs of the Healthy China Initiative and the high-quality development requirements of the high-end health care cause, particle therapy facilities, an important part of major projects to improve people’s wellbeing, highly require the collaboration of experts in multiple fields to conduct in-depth and extensive exchanges and further share research results and experience, so as to promote technological innovation. They expressed the hope that the Forum could further promote the development and innovation of the particle therapy facility design and construction.
As Japan is a world leader in the development of the particle therapy industry, the Forum specially invited Tatsuaki Kanai, Vice Director of Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center, and Hisamichi Tanaka from K.ITO Architects & Engineers Inc., the design agency of Ion-Beam Radiation Oncology Center in Kanagawa (i-ROCK), to give presentations. Mr. Takashima, head of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Beijing Office, also gave a speech in which he expressed JETRO Beijing Office would continue to act as a bridge to promote the particle therapy industries of China and Japan to strengthen technical cooperation and play an active role in advancing the development of China’s particle therapy industry.

Keynote speeches in the morning were chaired by Li Junli and Lu Jiade, which focused on the innovative technology and experience sharing on particle therapy facility design and construction. Representatives from Tianjin Huahui Engineering Architectural Design Co., Ltd., Central-South Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd., China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp., Ltd., Arcplus Institute of Shanghai Architectural Design & Research (Co., Ltd.), National Institute for Radiological Protection, China CDC, and Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University gave speeches on different topics.

The Chinatsinghua Particle Innovation Service Platform Strategic Cooperation Signing Ceremony and Engineering Technology on Tumor Particle Therapy Book Launch Ceremony were then held.
Beijing Chinatsinghua Particle Technology Co., Ltd. entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with Tianjin Huahui Engineering Architectural Design Co., Ltd., Central-South Architectural Design Institute Co., Ltd., China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp., Ltd., and Arcplus Institute of Shanghai Architectural Design & Research (Co., Ltd.), to jointly establish an in-depth, wide-ranging, multiform strategic partnership, take practicing China’s Healthy China Initiative as the goal orientation, and launch extensive cooperation in fields including particle therapy, architectural design and construction, and top talent cultivation.
The Engineering Technology on Tumor Particle Therapy Book Launch Ceremony was jointly officiated by the two editors-in-chief, Wang Xuewu and Tang Jintian, who expressed their thanks to the editors for their dedication and efforts and the hope that the book would play a good role in supporting and promoting the particle therapy field, serve China’s particle therapy technology and industry, and serve people’s health.

An exchange seminar and a roundtable discussion were held in the afternoon.
The exchange seminar was chaired by Liu Yaqiang and Chen Guoliang, with a focus on the thinking and exploration during particle therapy hospital construction and operation. Representatives from particle therapy projects of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Heyou International Hospital and Xiamen Humanity Hospital as well as many design and construction entities gave presentations.

The roundtable discussion was chaired by Chen Haitao, Lu Xiaoming, Teng Yunlong, Mei Lin, Gui Ling, and Zhang Yong, where 25 guests from different professional fields had hot discussions on 11 key topics in the three sectors of particle therapy hospitals, particle therapy facility design, and particle therapy facility construction.

Finally, Tang Jintian summed up the Forum and put forward four key points for the innovation and development of the industry: firstly, idea innovation should be adhered to in the development of particle therapy facility design and construction; secondly, continuous innovation in design and construction should be promoted through particle therapy technology innovation; thirdly, design and construction standards should be innovated to effectively promote industry development; fourthly, learning and communication should be strengthened to catch up with international cutting-edge technologies and promote industry innovation and development.
