China Association for Medical Devices Industry 2020 Industry Annual Meeting was grandly opened in Shanghai on December 21, 2020, which was organized by China Association for Medical Devices Industry (CAMDI) and Strategic Innovation Alliance of Medical Device Technology, co-organized by the People’s Government of Gaochun District, Nanjing City, and supported by entities including Shandong Shinva Medical Instrument Co., Ltd., Johnson & Johnson (China) Investment Ltd., Thermo Fisher Scientific (China) Co., Ltd., Mid-Link Biopharmaceutical Technology Group, Allgens Medical Science and Technology Co., Ltd. and media including China Medical Device Information, innomd.org and DXY. Nearly 600 people from the medical device industry attended the Meeting with an active atmosphere on site.
Zhao Yixin, President of CAMDI, delivered a speech for the 2020 Industry Annual Meeting. According to her, the pandemic has played a positive role in promoting the development of China’s medical device industry in terms of the number of enterprises, the number of products registered, and patent licensing data in 2020; during the pandemic, China’s medical device industry has played a cornerstone role in supporting global medical care technologies and supplies, and the government has paid more attention to the medical device, biomedicine and smart healthcare industries; with the formation of a new development pattern that takes the domestic market as the mainstay and allows the domestic and foreign markets to boost each other, the new demands for medical devices at home and abroad will bring new opportunities and hopes for the industry; China’s medical device industry can develop towards high technology, high quality, and large scale and effectively enhance its international competitiveness and influence only by strengthening the innovation of industrial core technologies, seizing the strategic opportunities for new business forms, and actively expanding international cooperation.
The 2020 Industry Annual Meeting was presided over by Jiang Feng, Executive Vice President of CAMDI. According to him, the year 2020 is the concluding year of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and the 13th Five-Year Plan and the crucial year of planning for the 14th Five-Year Plan, and the raging COVID-19 pandemic has made it extremely heroic; according to the “Healthy China Strategy” and the requirement for “developing high-end medical equipment”, the medical device industry has become one of the important indicators for measuring a country’s scientific and technological progress and national economy modernization level in the national economy development; it is significant for CAMDI to hold the China Association for Medical Devices Industry 2020 Industry Annual Meeting in such a context, which will summarize and interpret the industry situation this year, provide a scientific outlook for the development trends, and discuss the new ways out for the industry to think about changes and break through, gather strength to seek innovation and achieve win-win cooperation under the new situation.
Song Weixing, member of the Standing Committee of Gaochun District Party Committee and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Gaochun Economic Development Zone, delivered a welcome speech. Gaochun is a city of nature and ecology where mountains, rivers, city and forest are integrated into one, a city of culture and wittiness where history and folklore resonate with each other, and a city of harmony and well-being where people live happily. In recent years, centering on the city orientation of a “modern and vibrant new sub-city, demonstration area of Beautiful Nanjing, and southern pivot of the innovative city”, Gaochun District has adhered to innovation-driven and high-quality development, fully seized the opportunities of Jiangsu Medical Products Administration supporting the co-building of a medical device industrial park, CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Nanjing Municipal Government focusing on supporting high-quality development, Nanjing building a biomedical industry landmark, etc., and, according to the idea of “small incision, hard technology”, focused on cultivating and developing the medical device industry with the efforts of the whole district; it has planned and constructed a 7.78 square-kilometer Nanjing Medical Device Industrial Park with a high starting point, high standards and high efficiency, strongly and orderly advanced the construction of “one-institute six-center” public service platforms such as Jiangsu Institute of Medical Device Testing Gaochun Branch, and set up seven new R&D institutions with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and other universities and institutes; it has gathered more than 900 medical device-related enterprises and built a complete industrial chain covering R&D and production, front-end services, market supporting, etc., with an increasingly perfect industrial ecology and good industrial agglomeration effect. Gaochun District, via this Annual Meeting, hopes to build a bridge for more people from outside to enter Gaochun, understand Gaochun and see the great potential and infinite possibilities of Gaochun, thus making Gaochun more visible in the medical device industry.
Innovation is a nation’s soul and driving force of progress. The development of the medical device industry is inseparable from the innovative development of clinical medicine. Ge Junbo, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University and Vice President of CAMDI, analyzed the innovation and exploration of Chinese medical devices and cardiovascular interventional devices from the perspective of a clinician. According to him, young doctors are the main innovators, for whom they have established the Center for Cardiovascular Innovations and Innovation Academy to strive to create a closed loop from innovation to product incubation, research and development, public services, clinical studies, and to innovation courses. He also shared the arduous R&D journey of the sirolimus-eluting bioresorbable coronary scaffold system product. According to him, he has mixed feelings as a participant in innovative medical device R&D, and he called on domestic entrepreneurs with feelings to work hand in hand with clinical workers to develop and manufacture good medical device products for the benefit of patients and the world.
Bian Zhenjia, research fellow of the Counsellors’ Office of the State Council and former member of the CPC Leading Group of the China Food and Drug Administration, shared “Issues with China’s Medical Device Industry Development and Some Thoughts” using his years of research and regulatory experience. He gave several suggestions for accelerating the high-quality development of China’s medical device industry chain and supply chain, starting from analyzing the issues with the key and core technologies, industry chain and supply chain of China’s medical device industry. He suggested that the relevant national departments, especially the State Council, should issue a document on accelerating the high-quality development of China’s medical device industry; he suggested highlighting problem orientation and setting up special projects for key medical device technologies; he suggested supporting the leading enterprises to establish national platforms and industry chain alliances to drive the upstream and downstream development of the industry chain, etc.
Geng Daoying, Vice President and Director of Department of Radiology, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, shared and interpreted “Functional MR Imaging and AI and the Clinical Value Thereof”. She analyzed the important value of neuroimaging in clinical diagnosis with vivid cases and introduced the useful exploration of the clinical application of AI in imaging diagnosis made by Huashan Hospital in cooperation with medical device enterprises.
The forum in the afternoon was presided over by Hu Huihui, Deputy Secretary General of CAMDI.
Gu Xuefei, research fellow and Director of Division of Healthcare Security Research of China National Health Development Research Center, shared “Discussions on Health Insurance Reform Logic and Trends”. According to him, the reform of models of health insurance payment will involve the coordinated advancement of medical service supply-side reform, the healthcare security system with Chinese characteristics is a multi-level healthcare security system with social health insurance as the main body, the logic of the reform is from “passive payment” to “strategic purchase”, and the governance system emphasizes the rule of law and socialization.
Qiu Zhiye, Vice General Manager of Allgens Medical, introduced the “R&D Progress and Development Trends of Bionic Bone Repair Materials”. According to him, the future development trends of bionic bone repair materials include the secondary innovation that develops new product specifications and new methods of use as oriented by clinical needs, the application innovation that expands indications and clinical departments, and the integrated innovation that targets bioactivity and functionality.
Wang Yonggang, Secretary General of Plastic Recycling Association of China National Resources Recycling Association, explained the “Industry Chain Working together to Build a Green Recycling Plastic Supply Chain System” using the case of infusion bottle/ bag recycling in medical institutions, and expressed the hope that more recycled plastics could be used to reduce the industry’s environmental footprint and better protect our planet; he called on global brands, retailers, material suppliers, industry associations and other organizations that share the same vision to work together to create a new synergistic pattern.
Yang Yi from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of West China Hospital, Sichuan University shared an innovation case of his team. According to him, clinical innovation and achievement transformation of medical devices require the combination of medicine, engineering, and business as well as close cooperation among multidisciplinary R&D teams.
Luo Ke, partner of KPMG China, introduced the IPO listing examination focus and response for medical device enterprises based on the results of such enterprises’ listing on the STAR Market and ChiNext.
Zhang Feng, Deputy Director of Nanjing Municipal Healthcare Security Bureau, mainly introduced the centralized procurement of medical consumables in Nanjing City. According to him, the model of Nanjing Medical Centralized Procurement Support Center directly settling with supply enterprises has fully covered primary medical institutions and above in Nanjing.
Zhang Kunlun, Deputy Director of the Office of Joint Conference of Industry Association for Credit System Building in the Medicine-Related Areas, introduced the system building, working mechanism, standard system and platform construction of the credit system building in medicine-related areas. CAMDI joined the Joint Conference of Industry Association for Credit System Building in Medicine-Related Areas authorized by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2019 and has taken the lead in the industry credit system building of medical device enterprises, providing credit investigation and credit rating services, etc. for medical device industry enterprises.
On the first day of the 2020 Industry Annual Meeting, activities such as the Nanjing (Gaochun) Medical Device Industrial Park Promotion, the Report on the First Anti-Pandemic Deeds in the Medical Device Industry of China, and the Annual Report on the Development of Medical Device Industry in China (2020) Release Ceremony were also held.
