Number of Applicants Reaches a New High • 66 Projects Won Awards
The China Medical Device Design & Entrepreneurship Competition is a national design and entrepreneurship competition for medical device industry initiated by the Department of Science and Technology for Social Development of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), guided together by the Department of Science and Technology for Social Development and the China National Center for Biotechnology Development (abbreviated as CNCBD), and sponsored by the Strategic Innovation Alliance of Medical Device Technology. It was first held in 2018 with 283 medical device design projects under research participated. It is estimated that, within three months after the competition, 15 awarded projects have raised nearly CNY 1.7 billion, which powerfully boosted the design and achievement transformation. The competition is highly praised by all parties.
The competition was divided into four categories, OEM, IVD, AI and software, materials and components. And 607 projects from home and abroad have signed up the competition. After the preliminary and intermediary contests, 20 OEM projects, 15 IVD projects, 15 AI and software projects and 16 materials and components projects (66 in total) have entered in the finals in Suzhou (materials and components & IVD) and Kunshan (OEM & AI and software).
To accelerate the coordination between projects and the industry, the organizer has well planned the Global Device Week in the same period, and held the opening ceremony of 2019 China Medical Device Design & Entrepreneurship Competition (Final) & Global Device Week on the morning of September 5. Global Device Week
Two Academicians and 368 Experts - Analysis on the Ecosphere of InnovationThe Global Device Week held in the same period has gathered several innovative enterprises, scientific research institutions, clinical experts, third-party ODMs, testing, animal and clinical trial agencies, patent service providers as well as the suppliers of upstream materials, components and technology services, medical device distribution alliance, incubator, investment organizations and other related enterprises and resources. It was held for the first time in 2018, with 407 participating enterprises (57 innovative service agencies and scientific institutions), 314 investment organizations, 283 guest speakers and 6,191 registrants within four days, with 10,351 person-times in total. In the 2019 Global Device Week, the time for site activity was shortened into 2.5 days from previous 4 days, however, it has attracted 483 participating enterprises (96 innovative service agencies and scientific institutions), 343 investment organizations, 368 guest speakers and 7,650 registrants within four days, with 15,643 person-times in total. There was a great improvement compared with 2018, especially the quality and quantity of competition projects as well as the flow of visitors.
Academicians Ge Junbo and Sun Yinghao attended the CDIEC 2019 and Practical Operation Training on Doctor’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship and gave their speeches on September 5. They shared their experience on clinical innovation and achievement transformation as the top in the industry. The audiences were deeply inspired. CDIEC also discussed from the aspects of design of clinical trial, design, development and registration process of innovative product, and the cooperation model between doctors and enterprises, and made an utmost effort to break the myth and solve the problem in the innovation and entrepreneurship of doctors.
TMIS 2019 has invited the industrial opinion leaders from innovative service agencies, scientific research institutions and production operation enterprises to carry out deep study on the path of innovative achievement transformation, to put the industry-university-research cooperation into practice, and deeply discuss the significance for innovative service agencies to promote the achievement transformation, so as to enable the agencies to further promote the innovative development of medical devices in China as the accelerator of the ecological environment of industry, university, research, application, resources and innovation. Themed as “Made with Originality, Break out with Innovation”, Device China 2019 has invited several leaders from provincial industrial supervision departments and industrial experts to interpret the ecological development of China’s medical device industry and the latest changes in industry policies, and discuss the policy trend of medical device, enterprises’ key points in clinic, new materials and new areas of medical device, medical AI, IVD, investment, financing, M&A and listing as well as other hot issues. Co-sponsored by BioBAY and China Association for Medical Devices Industry (CAMDI), Device China has been held successfully for eight times. The Device China 2019 has received over 1,700 visitors, which is the highest population in latest years.
The Global Device Week also invited 368 guests from the related parties of medical device innovation, such as the national clinical medicine innovation centers, industrial supervision departments, review experts and investment experts, together with the industrial elites, to discuss the hot issues including ergonomics, cosmetic medicine, ultrasound, vascular devices, gynecological and obstetrical devices and AI, plan and establish the platform for the coordination and cooperation of innovative projects, innovative service agencies and medical device industry so as to provide one-stop solutions to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Medical Fair China is the core component of Global Device Week. It was successfully held in Suzhou for the first time in 2018, with 207 exhibitors and an exhibition area of 10,000 m2. The market response is warm and it is well received. After another year of intensive efforts, this year, the scale of exhibition has been upgraded to 302 exhibitors with an exhibition area of 15,000 m2. The exhibition attracted a large number of domestic and foreign well-known brands, including both traditional well-known enterprises such as Mindray, Boston Scientific, Frankenman, Medtronic, Wego Group, Shenzhen Lifetech Scientific, Shinva, Flon Holdings, and WuXi Apptec, and a large number of new exhibitors such as Biobase Biodustry (Shandong) Co, Ltd., Ningbo View Software Technology Co. Ltd., Hunan Techray Medical Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Saikang Medical Equipment Co., Ltd. and Menarini. The innovative service booths of Beijing Healtech Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd., Mid-link Technology Testing Co., Ltd., WuXi Apptec, Tianjin TEDA Biomedical Engineering Company Limited, Guangzhou Jiutai Medical Device Technology Co., Ltd. and Harmogalaxy Platform Technology Management Co., Ltd. attracted the attention of entrepreneurs and innovative enterprises.
Medical Fair China is not an ordinary finished product exhibition, but the collection of various factors and links of the innovation industry chain of the medical device into one exhibition hall. In addition to showcasing innovative products and new products on the market, the specialized booths respectively displayed all kinds of innovative service resources, innovation transformation results of scientific research institutes and research hospitals at home and abroad, investment environment of domestic parks, upstream raw materials, spare parts, etc., which made the innovation projects at the different stages solve all developing problems in one stop in the activity.
On the morning of September 5, the Integrate Professional Competition for Large, Medium and Small Enterprises (Huawei Special) of the Eighth China Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition was held at the same time (hereinafter referred to as the “Huawei Special Competition”). The Huawei Special Competition is a nationwide public competition, for the purpose of improving the ecological chain of medical device emerging industry, encouraging innovative enterprises to cross the border from industry, share innovation resources and release the technical requirements, fostering a new environment of win-win cooperation, collaborative innovation and ecological cooperation, and exploring the benign mode and long-term mechanism of accurate docking between large and small enterprises. The Huawei Special Competition focused on the field of active health and mobile medical care, and paid attention to the artificial intelligence, wearable devices, telemedicine and other products within the scope of mobile medical care from the perspectives of prevention and chronic disease management, so as to combine the R&D direction and products of participating enterprises with the innovation and development of Huawei industry.
Promoting innovative development of medical device is an important decision made by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. The held 2019 China Medical Device Design & Entrepreneurship Competition (Final) & Global Device Week will boost innovation of national medical device industry and international innovation and cooperation, accelerate achievements transformation of the medical device clinical research and institutes, and further promote the innovative development of medical device in our country.
