The registration channel of China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition 2019 was open On April 8, and closed on July 20. During the enrollment (103 days), a total of 607 domestic and overseas projects from four major sectors (optics, mechanics and electronics, in vitro diagnostics, AI and software, and materials and accessories technology) participated in this event. After the enrollment, the organizers of this competition invited a number of top-notch experts in these fields to conduct preliminary selection of the application materials. Multiple projects entered the semi-finals. Since August 1, the competition has entered the semi-final stage. On August 1, the semi-final related to AI and software was held in Chengdu. On August 6 and 7, semi-finals in terms of optics, mechanics and electronics, in vitro diagnostics, AI and software, and materials and accessories technology were held in Weihai.

On August 10, the semi-final of optics, mechanics and electronics was held under the sound support of People’s Government of Gaochun District, Nanjing. Zhang Zheng, standing committee member and executive deputy chief of Committee of Gaochun District, Nanjing, Jiang Feng, director of China Strategic Innovation Alliance of Medical Device Technology and standing vice president of China Association for Medical Devices Industry (CAMDI), along with leaders from business bureau, science and technology bureau, market supervision bureau, health commission, economic development zone of Gaochun District attended this semi-final. Several industry experts were invited to serve as the judge of semi-final of optics, mechanics and electronics. On the spot, 20 excellent innovation and entrepreneurship projects performed road shows, each project was subject to a 20-minute presentation, including 15 minutes for speech and five minutes for questions and answers session with the judges and judges scoring. At last, two first prizes, three second prizes, five third prizes and ten excellent prizes were awarded in the semi-final according to the scores. The results of the semi-final in optics, mechanics and electronics were ranked nationally and published. The top 15 will enter the national final to be held in Kunshan on September 5.
Gaochun of Nanjing – International Cittaslow develops rapidly, competitors praise the entrepreneurial environment for big health industry
As the local co-organizers of China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition 2019, People’s Government of Gaochun District, Nanjing provided substantial support for this event. As one famous “international cittaslow”, Gaochun is a modern and dynamic new city in the south of Nanjing, demonstration area of beautiful Nanjing, new southern pivot of famous innovative city. It takes pride in its rich history, convenient transportation location, idyllic natural scenery, and cozy living environment. At present, Gaochun mainly focuses on leading industry, gathers the development momentum, accelerates the innovation-driven development and devotes to “green rise” (eco-friendly development). During the new practice which adheres to ecology and industry, the local government mobilized the whole district to cultivate and develop the medical device industry by proposing the idea of “small entry point and solid technical foundation” and targeting new types of rehabilitation medical equipment, interventional medical devices, in vitro diagnosis (IVD) and other directions. The competent departments not only formulated a series of incentive policies in terms of entrepreneurial support, product innovation and talent introduction, but also built a multi-level service platform in collaboration with CAMDI, Jiangsu Drug Administration, Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone and other entities. In the meantime, a medical device technology industrial park of nearly 8 square kilometers was built, which attracted over 50 enterprises such as Lepu Medical and 3H Medical Corporation. The local government intends to build this park into a veritable biomedical landmark as well as a national famous medical device industry base by 2025. The favorable innovation and entrepreneurship environment in Gaochun won constant praise from the competitors.

China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition (CMDDEC) is a national competition in the field of medical devices. It is initiated by the Department of Science and Technology for Social Development of Ministry of Science and Technology, guided and approved by the Department of Science and Technology for Social Development of Ministry of Science and Technology and China National Center for Biotechnology Development. This competition is held to inspire the zeal of enterprises and medical staff for innovation, strengthen the link between innovation, clinical application and capital, deepen the cooperation between “industry, university, research, application and supervision” of medical device industry, and promote the sustainable innovation and development of China's medical device industry. CMDDEC was first held in 2018, which attracted 283 medical device innovation projects under investigation. According to statistics, 15 awarded projects in the final raised nearly CNY 1.7 billion in total three months after the competition, effectively expediting the transformation of the results to the industry.
