The National Key Research and Development Project on ‘256-Slice, 16-cm medical CT system with high definition, high speed and large volume’ involved in the 13th Five Year Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology was officially launched on February 18 in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Experts held that China is expected to master the core technique of large medical imaging equipment, break down the technological monopoly and improve the medical device and equipment level by virtue of this project.

It is known that this project has been offered with CNY 50 million by National Key Research and Development Project in “the 13th Five Year Plan” and is led by FMI Medical Systems Co., Ltd. A total of 10 institutions including Zuzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and The First Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Zhejiang University jointly participated in this research project. “256-Slice high-speed CT is more intellectualized, with a lower radiation dose, a faster scanning speed and a higher image quality. Only one revolution will complete the scanning in any single organ, which can help doctors observe the beating heart and coronary arteries clearly and realize the early intervention of asymptomatic high-risk population with coronary heart disease and patients with electrocardiographic abnormalities”, Jiang Haochuan, the expert of Thousand Talents program and company president of FMI Medical Systems Co., Ltd said. Besides, 256-Slice high-speed CT will provide more examination information for clinical therapy through various after-treatment techniques and play a crucial role in the protocol formulating of interventional and surgical operations, as well as the assessment of postoperative efficacy and functional recovery.

Insiders said that the current 256-Slice high-speed CT equipment still relies on the export, which makes the price so high. However, the domestication of high-end medical devices will reduce the medical costs largely and benefit more people. “This project gives priority to enterprise innovation and combines industry-university-research collaboration with medical technology. The breakthrough of core technology will propel pharmaceutical industry towards a bigger and more powerful industry, thus providing strong support for ‘Healthy China’ strategy”, Dong Zhifeng, deputy director of China National Center for Biotechnology Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology said.
