Ophthalmic disease is a medically “major disease”, and there are dozens of known ophthalmic diseases. For example, there are at least hundreds of millions of people in the world suffering cataract and glaucoma; with the popularity of digital products, the proportion of patients with myopia is rising, while the age of myopia patient is lowering, and there have been nearly 400 million patients with myopia in China, which is 1.5 times of the average global level. The ophthalmic medical device industry in China is developing at annual increase rate of 20%, and it is genuinely the sunrise industry. The ophthalmic device manufacturing industry is becoming the new ophthalmic device manufacturing center in the world with huge market potential and increasing core competitiveness.

To meet the requirement of rapidly developed ophthalmic industry and respond to the voice of members, the first preparatory meeting of Ophthalmology and Optometry Branch of China Association for Medical Devices Industry (CAMDI) was held on July 13, 2016 in the meeting room of the association, and leaders from approximately ten corporations attended the meeting, including but not limited to Eyebright Medical Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing Remote Horizon Group, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care (Shanghai) Ltd., Carl Zeiss (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Suzhou MicroClear Medical Instruments Co., Ltd., and the meeting was hosted by Zhao Yisu, the secretary-general of CAMDI.

In the meeting, Zhang Lin, deputy secretary general of CAMDI introduced the key works of CAMDI and the working mode of the Branch, and the participated corporations introduced their development situations and expressed their willingness to participate in the works of the Branch. The participants then had deep discussion in respect of the detailed process, working direction and purposes of the Branch, and expressed their expectation that the Branch can have close cooperation with CFDA, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and other government departments and invite well-known experts, hospital and more foreign and domestic-funded enterprises joining the Branch to boost the healthy development of the industry. The successful holding of the meeting laid a good foundation for the establishment of the Branch.
